Deal with disc disease

Disc disease refers to the pain in the lower back and neck. The wear and tear on the disc of the spine lead to problems in the back or neck. Disc disease can lead to numbness, throbbing pain, and weakness in the arms or legs. Disc disease is a degenerative disorder and gets worse over time and age.

Know how to manage disc disease

Depending on the pain associated with disc disease, the doctor would either suggest non-surgical or surgical methods to treat the problem.

Non-surgical techniques

Pain medications - The doctor would recommend painkillers or pain relievers that could give some relief for disc disease. This is the first and foremost step before any significant treatments. Medicines such as aspirin, naproxen, ibuprofen, and other related medication would be administered in connection with their usage to relieve pain and inflammation. Based on the severity of the pain and the patient’s condition, the doctor would recommend narcotic painkillers or muscle relaxants. These are considered to be extremely effective in treating acute or severe pain.

TENS - Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation is a device that sends electric pulses through the body. These electronic signals help to treat the pain by minimizing it. TENS directly transmits the signals over the skin that is connected to electrode pads, which are worn on the patient’s skin. With the help of a remote, the doctor can control the range of frequencies.

Ultrasound - To warm the affected area and to bring proper blood flow, the doctor would recommend an ultrasound. This could also help to heal the nutrients in the field of pain.

Surgical techniques

Spinal fusion surgery - Under this surgery, two vertebrae will be grafted or fused to reduce the pain. With this surgery, the doctor will eliminate the motion at the spinal segment, which helps to minimize the pain.

Artificial disc replacement surgery - Under this surgery, the doctor will remove the spinal disc completely to maintain the height of the disc space. Later, the artificial disc device will be implanted in its place.

Laminectomy - The vertebral bone is removed, and the back part of the muscle is pushed aside to keep the parts of the vertebra adjacent to the lamina intact. This decompression surgery will result in the enlargement of the spinal canal that will help in the release of pressure on the spinal cord or the nerves providing relief.

Microscopic discectomy - The affected part of the disc will be removed under this lumbar surgery. This will ease out pressure created on the nerve tissue and helps to alleviate pain.

Endoscopic discectomy – It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is performed with the help of a tubular device. This helps to relieve pain from the roots of the nerves.
