November 17th - National Epilepsy Day

November 17th is celebrated as “National Epilepsy Day” all over the nation. Every such celebration has an underlying purpose associated with it. Celebration of National Epilepsy Day also has its own genuine and benevolent objective. We take this opportunity to create awareness in the society to fight the social stigma associated with epilepsy disorder. There is always an invisible glass door that shuns such people from society. When in some cases, this glass door is created by the society, at times the patient himself creates this door. Various initiates are taken to educate people about the do’s and don’ts of epilepsy and the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment of this disorder. A clear understanding of the various facets of this disorder helps both the patient and the society to deal with the situation more sensibly and improve the quality of their life.

Epilepsy:

Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder marked with recurrent unprovoked seizures that can be fatal if left untreated. We all know that the brain cells- Neurons communicate through electric signals. Sometimes there will be a sudden surge of these electric signals, resulting in recurrent seizures.

Diagnosis:

Various factors like age, other medical conditions, family history etc. are taken into consideration while diagnosing the disorder. Electroensephalogram(EEG), Video EEG Telemetry, CT Scan, MRI Scan, Sodium- Amytal Testing, Neuropsychology are some of the tests conducted for diagnosis.

Treatment:

Treatment for epilepsy aims to control or suppress these seizures. Therefore, the type of treatment depends upon the type of seizures. Based on the location and extent of the electric surge that causes seizures, Seizures can be classified into two-Generalized Seizures and Partial Seizures.

Generalized Seizures:

Generalized Seizures occurs when the neurons discharge electric signals at an abnormal rate in all parts of the brain. Tonic seizures, clonic seizures, atonic seizures, tonic-clonic seizures, absence seizures, myoclonic seizures etc. come under generalized seizures.

Partial Seizures:

In Partial or Focused Seizure abnormal surge occurs in a particular area in the brain. The symptoms of the partial seizure depend upon the part of the brain that surges abnormal electric signals. The two main partial seizures are- Simple Partial Seizure and complex Partial seizure.
Antiepileptic medications are the basic therapy for treating epilepsy. Individualized or tailor-made plans are implicated for each patient depending upon medical history. Medication has to be taken on a daily basis to maintain a steady level of the drug in the bloodstream to prevent seizures.
